Quickest solutions to common device issues with your laptop

Your computer doesn’t power on at all

When you press the power button and nothing happens, it’s often due to just a faulty battery. A faulty battery, even with the charger connected, will still cause you to be unable to power up your device. and may leave you without access to your files and programs. If your laptop appears dead with no sounds or lights, there are several potential causes and solutions.

If not the battery, it’s definitely possibly a motherboard issue as well, or a faulty Hard Disk Drive (HDD), Solid State Drive (SSD), RAM charging port etc.

Laptop powers on, but nothing shown on the screen

If your laptop powers on with signs like lights or sounds but the screen is blank, you won’t be able to use it. This can be particularly frustrating since the machine seems functional except for the screen. Start by unplugging the laptop from its power source and removing the battery. Hold down the power button for about a minute, then plug it back in and restart. Finally, replace the battery and reboot the laptop.

If this doesn’t work, the issue might be a memory failure. Ensure the memory modules are properly seated in their slots; you may need to replace them. Additionally, try removing components like the hard drive, modem, or keyboard to identify the problem. If the screen remains blank after these steps, the motherboard or processor could be the cause.

Laptop turns on and off by itself, boot loops

You may power on your laptop only for it to turn off and on again on its own. The laptop may shut down completely, or you could be left with a flickering display that makes it impossible to see the screen. Start by checking your memory modules or replacing them. If that does not resolve the issue, your motherboard may be to blame. It could also be a corrupted Windows operating system that’s causing the booting issue. In such cases, we may need to assist to reformat the drive and reinstall Windows. If the drive is damaged, we may require data recovery options to recover the files, before replacing the drive entirely.

Loud or buzzing sounds coming from the laptop

Most laptops only have a few moving parts within the device, either the fans or the hard disk drives. If you hear either of these sounds, quickly back up your files where possible because it could be your hard disk drive! If it is, it means that the drive could go kaput anytime, which could result in data loss, or you may have to proceed with data recovery to get your data back.

Note however that it could also be a faulty CPU or GPU fan! Especially if the sounds only get louder as you use the laptop/desktop over the time.

Laptop screen freezes, or automatically powers off

You start using your computer, only for it to freeze or shut down after a few minutes. This frustrating issue can lead to lost data and unsaved files, and it also makes you worry about your laptop’s condition. If your laptop shuts down or freezes, check the bottom for heat or if the fan is working harder than usual. This likely means the problem is heat-related. Clean out the fan and heat sink to prevent dust from blocking the processor cooling. If this doesn’t solve the issue, it might be a memory failure. Ensure the memory modules are correctly seated in their slots; you may need to replace them. Additionally, try removing components like the hard drive, modem, or keyboard to identify the problem. If the screen remains blank after these steps, the motherboard or processor could be the cause.

Battery doesn’t charge at all, or has fluctuating battery percentage

If your laptop does not charge properly, or perhaps doesn’t charge at all, try to adjust your AC adapter plug to make sure it’s connected properly. Alternatively, if you have a spare charger, try with that as well. If it doesn’t work, 99% of the time it’s a faulty battery that requires replacement. Battery replacement of your laptop is expected for devices over time, especially if it has gone through 2-3 years of heavy usage. With battery replacement, battery charging should work normally again. Note that there’s a slight chance that there’s a motherboard issue still.

LCD Screen Failure, Cracked Screen, Flickering Lines, Weird Colours on Screen

If there’s weird flickers, or strange lines on your screen, it could definitely be a faulty LCD. For certain cases, we’ll first need to attempt to clean the display connectors which may restore display functionality. For clear cracks on the screen, we’ll definitely need to get the display replaced. We have ALL screens available, ready for replacement. Ask us today for FREE on-site service at your location!

Keyboard keys autopressing by itself, or some keys not working

Have you tried typing on your keyboard, only to realise some keys are not working at all, or perhaps some keys are autopressing by itself? It’s unfortunately a common issue as your keyboard fails as a result of wear & tear, and especially more common if there’s been prior water damage with your device.
